CLASS DESCRIPTION: This introductory course will focus on the fundamentals of watercolor painting. We’ll explore techniques such as flat and graded washes, restricted wet ‘n wet, and direct or dry brush painting. Special techniques to create texture such as using salt and cellophane and splattering will also be explored. Participants will also learn to prepare paper and how to use and care for their painting tools. Each student will receive an introductory watercolor kit as part of the course fee. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Students who actively engage in this course can expect to learn:

  • Develop a basic understanding of watercolor materials and techniques
  • Learn to appreciate the beauty and complexity of watercolor as a medium

BIOGRAPHY: Teresa Holder is a full-time instructor in the Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History at Oklahoma State University. She has a BFA from OSU with a focus in watercolor and illustration and a MA in Museum Studies from OU. Currently she teaches Watercolor I, Intro to Museum Studies, Drawing I & II, 2D Foundations, and Advanced Life Drawing. Her medium of choice is watercolor with an encaustic glaze. According to Holder, “Watercolor painting has a fascinating history dating back centuries, yet today I consider it the most exciting medium there is, because of its diversity and the ability to mix with other media.
